Straddling the River Pescara in the central Italian Abruzzo region, the city of Pescara is home to about 125,000 people, and has a great reputation amongst holiday makers as a picture perfect place to spend time on a beach holiday on Italy's warm and welcoming Adriatic Coastline.
Pescara is in many ways a typically Italian beach resort town, with a great shopping area packed with little designer boutiques, and a shoreline characterised by calm inviting waters.
For many years, Pescara and the 20 kilometres of beaches that stretch away to the north and south have been a well kept secret amongst Italians, but in the last few years, increased popularity with tourists from the rest of the continent have seen more resorts open, and the region develop greatly as the "new Tuscany".
Certainly, Abruzzo as a region lends itself beautifully to being a destination for a fly drive holiday exploring it, and the beautiful countryside is peppered with small, traditional villages where you can dine out on locally prepared dishes and glasses of beautiful wine. In addition to this, the rich history of the area means that no matter where you go in Abruzzo, you will find reminders of the past in the form of stunning churches and local museums, as well as plenty of examples of ancient Roman architecture that survive in the countryside.
