Genoa lies on the Mediterranean coast in the far northwest of Italy. The largest and most important port in the country, the corresponding wealth of the city has given it a rich history, many beautiful buildings, and excellent museums - indeed in 2004, the city was named as the European City of Culture.

The city of Genoa offers a huge amount of things to see and do for visitors who arrive there from all over the world. Aside from the pretty old town, and beautiful buildings, attractions in Genoa include the largest aquarium in continental Europe; The Cathedral di San Lorenzo, where you can see an "emerald cup" claimed to be the true Holy Grail (actually an Egyptian glass bowl); the beautiful monumental cemetery on Staglieno Hill; and the superb collection of palaces on Via Garibaldi.

One of the most notable landmarks in the city is the statue of Christopher Columbus in Piazza Aquaverde, which commemorates the (disputed) birthplace of the man who discovered America.

Outside the city, in the region of Liguria, you can really get back to nature in the beautiful villages and rolling hills of the area. Liguria is famous for the excellent beaches along the Tyrrhenian Sea, where there are many small resort towns offering good quality hotels and restaurants.
