God it seems is not a great fan of Catania. This Sicilian city at the foot of the towering Mount Etna has been destroyed a number of times over the centuries by terrifying volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
Catania's latest incarnation dates from the Baroque era, and there are many pleasant buildings from this period around the city, including several particularly pretty churches.
The island of Sicily differs greatly from the mainland of Italy in terms of its culture, and also the pace of life that it sustains. It is a beautiful place characterised by mountains and valleys, of olive groves and vineyards. Many visitors to Sicily find themselves entranced by its beauty, and as you tour the island in your hire car, there is plenty to see and do - especially visiting small villages in order to get close to the locals.
Catania itself inevitably suffers in comparison with the beauty of the rest of the island. While in many ways, the city is a pretty place, with plenty to recommend it, the feeling that one gets exploring it is of a drab city just holding on and getting by, which is a real shame. The hotels in Catania are of a high standard, and in addition to this, with so much to see and do in the south of Sicily, it is still a city well worth visiting.
