Cagliari has been the capital of Sardinia since Roman times. The largest city on the island, it lies in the south east corner, surrounded by hills and rocky coves.
For most visitors to Sardinia, Cagliari is the first stop, a city that they often pass through on their way to getting to one of the many smaller resort towns elsewhere, but the fact is, that this small city has plenty on offer, both in the form of historic attractions such as the Bastione San Remy, and the ancient fortifications; as well as modern shopping and nightlife areas offering something for every visitor to Cagliari.
Those arriving on the island in order to explore it by car will find Cagliari to be the perfect base from which to tour Sardinia. The city offers excellent accommodation at surprisingly low prices, and most of the main attractions on the island, such as Carbonia and Arbatax are no more than a couple of hours away by car.
To the north, you can drive to the town of Olbia - the centre of the famous Emerald Coast (Costa Emeralda), where you can stay in some of the most exclusive, and therefore, most expensive hotels in the whole of Europe among the buildings that date back some three millennia.
