For many visitors to Puglia in southern Italy, Brindisi is best known for is status as one of the premier ports in the region, rather than as a destination in its own right. Brindisi is a little more than 100 kilometres to the south of the regional capital Bari, and is the main harbour for ferries going to Greece and the Greek Islands from Italy.

The town itself is comparatively small - home to around 100,000 people, but it does have plenty of attractions, including an excellent art gallery filled with paintings of the beautiful Puglia region, good shopping in the area round the harbour, and a lively weekend nightlife that attracts people into Brindisi from all over the surrounding area.

Close to Brindisi, aside from Bari, attractions include the historic town of Monopoli, as well as the famous Gallipoli, where there is a memorial to the soldiers who landed there.

About an hours drive from Brindisi, you can visit the town of Taranto, a place synonymous with large hairy spiders and mystical religions - although both are now nowhere to be seen on the streets.
