Although often overlooked by visitors to Italy in favour of more glamorous rivals such as Rome, Milan, and Florence, Bologna is a cultural haven in northern Italy. A city, which has gently developed over centuries, Bologna has a huge number of medieval buildings to wander through - including the stunning cathedral.
The main tourist area of Bologna can be found around Piazza Maguire - the central square of the city, where there are a number of museums and galleries displaying well-respected collections of high art and history.
Of course, Bologna is probably most famous for the ubiquitous meat sauce for pasta that the city will always be associated with, and certainly, the culinary reputation of Bologna and indeed the whole Emilio Romania region of Italy is one of the main reasons for visiting. Bologna is filled with excellent restaurants; ranging from places no more than a converted front room, through to exquisite Michelin starred gourmet palaces offering the highest in haute cuisine.
The area surrounding Bologna is best known for having some of Italy's finest beach resorts, and coastal towns such as Rimini, and Misano Adriatico on the Adriatic are excellent places to visit for a few days on part of a self drive tour around north eastern Italy.
Another place that is well worth visiting is San Marino - the oldest independent republic in the world, and one of the smallest countries in Europe. Although San Marino hosts an annual Formula One race, the Imola Autodrome where the race is held is actually just outside Bologna.
