The largest city in the south east of Italy, Bari's enviable location on the Adriatic Coast has long made it a popular choice for visitors to begin their holiday exploring the Puglia region of the country, and the centre of one of the largest tourism areas in Italy.
The most visited part of Bari is the picturesque old town where you can see the fantastic Basilica of San Nicola, the Cathedral of San Sabino (completed in 1171), and the famous Swabian Castle - the landmark that dominates the city. The Old Town is a haven for tourists seeking out the beautiful sights of Bari, whilst in the evening it is filled with revellers seeking out the great bars and nightclubs for which Bari is well known.
Heading south through the city from the old town, you find the shopping area on Via Sparano and Via Argiro in Murattiano, where in between seeking out the latest designer goods in small boutiques, you can relax at a pavement café facing the sea.
Beaches spread north and south along the coast from Bari, and inland from the city, you can find loads of small villages and towns where a simpler life is lived. Puglia is perfect for a driving holiday, especially during the glorious summer months, when its blend of beaches and countryside makes for an ideal destination.
