The city of Ancona in central Italy lies on the Adriatic Coast in the region of Marche. Best known for stunning beaches and its perfect climate, Ancona is understandably one of the most popular holiday destinations in Italy, and an ideal place from which to spend a memorable holiday exploring the Apennine Mountains and the coast.
The main tourist areas in and around Ancona are situated along the famous Conero Riviera, where miles of unspoilt sandy beaches await sun worshippers, and inland you can find buildings and ruins dating back to Roman times that you can explore at your leisure.
The Marche region of Italy is well known for its high quality cuisine, and there are a number of smaller medieval towns and villages to explore and many vineyards in the rolling countryside, where traditional wines are still made, including the famous Verdicchio del Castelli di Jesi.
Further away from Ancona, to the north, you can visit the independent republic of San Marino - one of the smallest countries in the world, and pay slightly more for everything than you would in any of the similar hill villages that dot the area. Other towns of interest within driving distance of Ancona include the premier league beach resort of Rimini, and also the city of Bologna with its famous churches museums and pasta with meat sauce.
