Alghero lies in the north east of Sardinia in the Sassari province. Home to around 35,000 people, Alghero is a city steeped in ancient traditions, where the past is strongly held to, and the unique Sardinian culture is best seen.

Unlike the rest of Italy, the main language that you hear in Alghero is a Catalan dialect - a holdover from when the island was ruled from Spain from 1372 until the seventeenth century.

The disparate history of Alghero as opposed to the rest of Italy has led to the city having an entirely different identity to anywhere else in the country. Buildings in Alghero are heavily influenced by styles from Spain, and the cuisine that you can expect in the many restaurants is as much Spanish as Tuscan.

Away from the city, the island of Sardinia offers a great deal for the casual tourist, with excellent beaches along the coasts, and a number of animals that live exclusively there, including the Mediterranean Monk Seal, and the wild boar - a popular delicacy in the restaurants of Alghero.

Amongst the top resorts close to Alghero that you might wish to explore during your holiday on the island of Sardinia are Torre Poglina and Spiaggia delle Bombarde, where there are several pleasant guesthouses, and the chance to get back to nature Sardinian style.
